Our History

Since 1909, Taylor Bros. Funeral Home has grown alongside the families of Matagorda County. What began as a small local undertaking business has become a full-service funeral home, guided by more than a century of service, adaptation, and commitment to the community. While our facilities and practices have evolved over time, our purpose has remained unchanged: to care for families with dignity, respect, and professionalism during life’s most difficult moments.

1909–1930s: The Beginning

Taylor Bros. traces its roots to 1909, when Taylor-Hill Furniture and Undertaking was established by Henry Hill, F.G. Ludwig, and Seth S. Taylor. At the time, furniture making and funeral services were closely connected, as furniture craftsmen often built caskets and assisted families with burial arrangements. The business was originally located just east of the courthouse on Seventh Street and served a growing community with practical, compassionate care.

In 1913, Seth S. Taylor purchased the business outright, setting the foundation for what would become a lasting funeral service tradition. He was later joined by his brother, Frank Shaw Taylor, and together they helped guide the business through its early years. As funeral service needs expanded beyond the provision of caskets, the undertaking side of the business continued to grow and specialize.

By the early 1930s, the Taylor name had become well known in the community. In 1932, a branch location was opened in Palacios, Texas, marking an important step in extending services to surrounding areas and establishing Taylor Bros. as a trusted regional funeral provider.

Mid-Century Growth and Transition

As funeral service evolved into a more formal and regulated profession, Taylor Bros. adapted alongside the industry. What had once been known as “undertaking” gradually became the modern role of the funeral director—requiring professional training, licensing, and a broader scope of responsibility. Funeral directors were no longer only craftsmen or coordinators, but trusted guides who helped families navigate legal requirements, public health standards, and the emotional realities of loss.

In 1952, the funeral home formally separated from the furniture business, allowing Taylor Bros. to focus exclusively on funeral service. This transition reflected the growing demand for comprehensive, professional care and marked an important step in the business’s development.

Throughout these decades, the funeral home relocated several times around the courthouse square as the community and business continued to grow. Each move reflected changing needs and a commitment to better serve families with appropriate facilities and expanded services.

Establishing a Permanent Home

In 1939, Taylor Bros. moved into a newly constructed building at 1300 Seventh Street, designed specifically for funeral service. This milestone represented a transition into a more modern and permanent operation.

By 1979, continued growth led to another relocation—this time to 2313 Avenue I, where a 12,000-square-foot facility was constructed. The building featured spacious chapels, gathering areas, and amenities that allowed families to handle all aspects of funeral care in one location. This move solidified Taylor Bros.’ reputation as a full-service funeral home capable of meeting a wide range of family needs.

A Time of Loss and Renewal

In 2021, a devastating fire destroyed the Avenue I facility. While the loss of the building was significant, the heart of Taylor Bros.—its people, history, and commitment to service—remained intact. Planning for the future began immediately, driven by a determination to continue serving the community without interruption.

In March 2024, Taylor Bros. reopened at the same Avenue I location in a newly rebuilt facility. Designed with both comfort and efficiency in mind, the new building reflects a balance between honoring the past and meeting the needs of today’s families. The space offers a welcoming environment for gathering, reflection, and remembrance.

Taylor Bros. Today

Today, Taylor Bros. Funeral Home continues to serve Matagorda County as a family owned, full-service funeral home. Our experienced team provides personalized services for families of all traditions and beliefs, managing every detail with care and clarity. From traditional funerals to memorial services and pre-arrangements, we remain committed to guiding families with compassion and professionalism.
