Wesley Vernon Wright, 89, of Port Lavaca, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Port Lavaca Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born February 24, 1920 in Jackson County to Minnie (Stevens) and Benjamin Buel Wright. He married Alice Johs Schuelke on June 19, 1953 in Palacios. They lived in Palacios until 2005.
Vernon enlisted in the Army in 1938 and was discharged in 1945. He was a staff sergeant during WW-II while he served in Central Europe. He retired from Alcoa Aluminum and was a member of the 25 year club. He was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church of Palacios.
Vernon will be remembered for his love of outdoors, gardening, fishing and dancing. He was known for always having a witty humor.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years: Alice Wright; son: Larry Schuelke and wife Melissa; daughters: Barbara Woods and Verna Kay Brown and husband Leslie; by grandchildren: Stacy and Wendy Schuelke, Nicholas Jost, Kristi and Tyler Jackson, Jennifer Herrera and Keith Brown and wife Bridgett; and by five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jack and Lester Wright and sisters Tressie and Effie Smith and Faye Walton.
The family will receive visitors 6 PM to 7:30 PM Sunday, December 20, 2009 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, December 21, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church of Palacios with Rev. June White officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.
