Obituary

Walter Lamar Evans died peacefully in his home on October 8th, 2023, in Bay City Texas at the age of 88.

Lamar is preceded in death by his wife, Ann Rainey Evans and his six siblings.

He is survived by his three sons, Lamar Jr. (wife Nicole), Craig, and Scott (wife Pam). He had four grandchildren: Christopher, Greg, Robert, and Ashley. Lamar also had five great-grandchildren (Bryson, Ella, Chloe, Lucia, and Eliora). Lamar is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his loving companion, Gayle Simons.

Lamar was born on December 14, 1934, in Waynesboro, Mississippi to Samuel Oliver and Clara Evans.

He graduated from Bay City High School in 1952 and attended the University of Texas.

Lamar's career was in Green Industry management. He was employed by Walker Seed & Garden Center for many years and formed Walker-Evans Company with Fred and Mary Jo Walker. In his latter years he owned and operated Gold Coast Nursery Tree Farm and was responsible for the planting of thousands of live oak trees throughout Matagorda County. For fifty-nine years, Lamar grew and provided over 9,400 trees for the local Chamber of Commerce Annual Tree Sale from 1965-2023.

He joined the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub Scout almost eighty years ago in 1943. Lamar joined Troop 45 of Bay City in 1946 where he obtained the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of fifteen. In 1952 he began serving as a Scoutmaster and continued to serve Scouting for the rest of his life in various leadership positions.

He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Bay City for 82 years. He served on numerous committees and taught Sunday school.

Lamar served in many community activities including serving as Chairman of the War Memorial (on the north side of the courthouse), serving as Chairman of the Bay City Housing Authority for thirty-eight years, and serving as President of the Bay City Lions Club in 1962.

Serving as the announcer for Bay City Black Cat football games for over twenty years, he loved his Bay City Blackcats.  He also dearly loved his Texas Longhorns!

A gifted story and joke-teller, Lamar had the ability to engage all with his contagious personality.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 14th, 2023 at the First Methodist Church in Bay City, Texas. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Rev.  Chris McNeill officiating.
