Walter Lee Eckhardt, 79, of Bay City, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2026. He was born December 1, 1946, in Houston, to the late Walter Helmuth Eckhardt and Dora Bernice Hosea Eckhardt.

Walter proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Saratoga. Following his military service, he dedicated his life to serving others through his work as a police officer. Throughout his career, he also worked as a business owner and chemical operator, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication.

Walter was a devoted father, husband, brother, and son who deeply loved his family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, music, and cheering on his beloved Houston Astros. He will be remembered for his loyalty, strength, sense of humor, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew and loved him. Walter’s deep faith in God guided his life and served as a lasting example for his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, LeAnn Ross Eckhardt; his brother, Richard Eckhardt; and his father-in-law, Jack Ross.

He is survived by his four children, whom he rescued often: sons, Hans Eckhardt and Timothy Eckhardt (Aimee); daughters, Stephanie Tipps (George) and Gretchen McLain (Clint); brother, Mike Eckhardt (Patty); 11 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved mother-in-law, Malissie Ross; sisters-in-law, Jackie Glancy, Angela Parker, and Cynthia Holden; and several loving cousins.

A Celebration of Walter’s Life will be held at 1:00 pm on May 16, 2026, at Ignite Church in Bay City, Texas.
