Obituary

Vivian Marie Janise Black, 85, of Van Vleck died January 16, 2026 surrounded by family. Vivian was a friend to many, sister to eight siblings, wife and mother of two boys. She was a longtime substitute teacher at the schools of Van Vleck ISD where she knew many teachers and students over her 30-plus years of service.

Born September 3, 1940 in Bay City to Maudie Augusta Loose Janise and Harry John Janise, Sr. Vivian grew up in Wadsworth and rode the school bus to Bay City to attend Holy Cross Catholic School and Bay City High School.

After meeting him at the Starland Bowling Alley in Bay City, Vivian dated and married Charles Ewell Black of Markham at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wadsworth. The were together for 63 years.

Vivian was first and foremost a homemaker and mother. She learned to clean, sew and cook from her mother and sisters. Her hobbies included crochet, ceramics, cross stitch, taking photos, scrapbooking and fishing. Vivian was very generous with her creative talents: She created, fitted, and sewed outfits for the band twirlers; mended band and football uniforms, sewed various dresses for friends, gave haircuts to her boys, her mother and sisters and even a student at school; and created several scrapbooks for friends. She enjoyed socializing as a member of Redhats, scrapbooking group, weekly girls luncheon and the school Ag Banquet.

Vivian’s greatest love was fishing with her husband. In the fall she would fish for trout, croakers, and flounders. She frequently out-fished her husband and even went fishing alone. She would catch her own bait, prepare the rod, reels, and lines, catch the fish and then prepare them for the freezer. She enjoyed the sound of the waves lapping against the bank of the Colorado and just being near the water.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, parents, eldest brother Eddie Janise, Sr., and three sisters, Shirley Hale, O’Dell Cartwright and Doris Weldon. She is survived by her sons Jeffrey Wayne Black of San Antonio and Michael Craig Black of Van Vleck and tree brothers, one sister and very many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 22, 2026 at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.
