Virginia Lee, 90, of Bay City, passed away Friday, January 29th, 2010 at the Matagorda House Nursing Center in Bay City. She was born in Sulphur, Oklahoma on November 13, 1919 to parents, Edgar Franklin and Jenny Mae Mauldin Smith. Virginia graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College and taught school in Bay City at Pierce School for over 20 years. She married Clifford Jack Lee on September 25, 1940 and worked with him for many years on the family ranch. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend to everyone who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clifford, a son, Robert Franklin Lee, and her sisters, Bessie Smith and Nellie Jo Womack. She is survived by her son and his friend Jack E. Lee and Patricia Armstrong of Chandler, Texas, daughters, Betty Jane Lee Clayton of Greenville, Georgia and Martha Nell Lee Cone of Bay City. She is also survived by a sister, Frankie Tanzy of El Paso, Texas and grand children, Gerald David Rodgers of Alpharetta, Georgia, Darrell Lee Rodgers of Austin, Texas, and Nell Lee Gibbens of Bay City, as well as great grand children, Caitlin Rodgers and Christopher Rodgers of Alpharetta, Georgia, Taylor Rodgers of Austin, David Gunner Gibbens, Alexis Grace Gibbens and Iralynn Grae Gibbens all of Bay City. She also leaves behind a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, February 1, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the Chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Bay City with Rev. Chris Harrison and Rev. Bill Lanigan, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Darrell Rodgers, David Rodgers, David Gibbens, Kim Abshier, Mac Crain, and Garland Kaiser. Honorary pallbearers will be Jon Abshier and Bill Lanigan. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the Friends of the Library. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Wayland Bryant –Thomas and the staff of AMED HOSPICE, and to the staff of Matagorda House Nursing Center.
