Dr. Tommy Walter Griffin, PhD, entered his eternal rest on January 18, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on April 16, 1946, in Palacios, Texas, he was the beloved son of Adrian Taylor Griffin and Alice Fayrene Griffin. A devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, Tommy lived a life marked by faith, service, and unwavering love for those around him.
Tommy was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Laura Earlene Griffin, who passed in 2023. Their life together was a testament to their marriage commitment in the Christian faith.
A dedicated leader and Bishop in the Church of God of Prophecy, Tommy served his congregation and community with humility and conviction. His ministry touched countless lives, and he remained deeply proud of his doctorate in theology—a reflection of his lifelong pursuit of spiritual understanding and his steadfast commitment to God’s work.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristi Griffin Loesch, and her husband, Shawn; his son, Jason Taylor Griffin, and his wife, Shannon; his sister, Barbara Annette West, and her husband, Lynn; his brother-in-law, Rodney Paul Dickens and sister-in-law, Nancy Marie Mayhew & husband, Richie. Tommy’s legacy continues through his grandchildren—Griffin Coley Cates, Taylor Elizabeth Cates, and Trey Alan Loesch—who brought him immense joy. He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Carol Michelle Hutcherson & husband, Destin; Alexandria Marie Dickens, Jordan Taylor Dickens, Amy Cristine Sikes Curbello, Jakob Paul Dickens, and Scott Gillum and his wife, Brenda; as well as great-nieces and nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.
Tommy’s life was defined by his faith, his leadership, and his deep love for his family. His presence, wisdom, compassion and gentle strength will be profoundly missed.
Services Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 14th at Northside Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, officiated by Scott Gillum. Lunch and fellowship will begin at 12:30, located at VFW Post #2438 1672 TX-60, in Bay City.
