Kirby Dismukes, 84, of Bay City passed away March 15, 2009. He was born September 9, 1924 in Harwood, Texas to the late Lee Terrell Dismukes and Gertrude Nancy Morgan Dismukes.
Kirby moved to Liberty, Texas where he graduated from Liberty High School in 1941 and enrolling at Texas A&M the following fall. Kirby joined the Navy Seabees in January, 1943, traveling to Newfoundland, England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. While in Germany he was selected to attend Stanford University. He was later discharged from the Navy in January, 1946 and returned to Texas A&M.
Kirby married Madelyn Phillips in 1947 and they moved to College Station in September of 1947. Kirby graduated from Texas A&M with a B.S. degree in 1949 and he and Madelyn moved to Bay City, Texas in 1951. Following graduation Kirby worked for the Farmers Home Administration in Liberty, Texas and later in Bay City, Texas. In 1956 Kirby left FHA, worked in banking, later in real estate and eventually for Conoco as a right of way agent where he retired.
Kirby loved his family and church, joining the First Baptist Church soon after arriving in Bay City. From his early years, Kirby always had a horse which was his mode of transportation. Being around horses and cattle were always a special interest. Kirby also enjoyed fishing and refinishing furniture which consumed much of his time following retirement.
He is survived by his daughter Paula Davis and husband Larry, grandson Jason Hurley, granddaughter Jennifer Rodriguez and husband Jeramy, and grandson Steven Davis. He is also survived by his 2 great-granddaughters Madysen and Dominique, his sisters-in-law Patsy Mullins and Joan Phillips, and very special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Madelyn Dismukes, daughter Nancy Poncik, grandson Christopher Hurley and his two brothers Richard Lee Dismukes and Kenneth Terrell Dismukes.
The family will receive visitors from 6 PM to 8 PM Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Frank Baker, Frank Bathe, Frank Hurley, Garlan Hinman, Stan Eldridge and B.J. Krenek. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tommy Mullins, Charlie McManus, Lee Waldrop, Richard Dismukes, Terrell Dismukes, Vernon Leissner, Sam Maglitto, Tony Poncik, Woody Reidel and Jug Rhymes.
