Wilma Gayle "Susie" Hamlin, 69, of Bay City, passed away in her home on April 21, 2015. She was born a twin on January 14, 1946, on the steps of the Matagorda General Hospital. She graduated from Tidehaven High School, where she was active in sports among many other activities, and was a cheerleader at Wharton County Junior College, where she was also voted Miss WCJC. Susie owned and operated A-1 Bail Bonds for thirty-three years, showing a tireless work ethic and compassionate nature to all she encountered. She was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church, serving on the Alter Guild, and an active member of the Matagorda County Pilot Club, Matagorda County 100 Club for many years, and member of American Legion Post 649 Ladies Auxiliary.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Frank & Edith Richardson Hurta; the special love of her life, Oren Hamlin; and her sister, Priscilla Wayman. Survivors include: daughter, Kristi Hamlin McCarthy & husband Michael; daughter, Elaine Fagner & husband Scott; sister, Gay Rayburn & Paul Nichols; brother, Frankie Joe Hurta & wife D'Ann; twin brother, Billy Boy Hurta & wife Anna; brother, Sam "Simon" Hurta; granddaughter, Sarah McCarthy; two nieces, six nephews, and many other family and close friends. She also leaves her special family, friends and caregivers: Evelyn Eure, LaVerne Hicks, Linda Henderson, Karen Huebner, Patti Lyle Johnson, Wendy Saha, and Barbara Sanders.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 24 at First United Methodist Church in Bay City, with Rev. Dr. Russ Munch officiating. Interment will follow at Midfield Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Shelton Lee Hebert, Jared Hurta, Bruce Hurta, Jeffrey Hurta, Russell Hicks, and Christopher McKinley. Members of the Matagorda County Pilot Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
