Sallie Bernice Milner Salas, 75, of Bay City passed away July 12, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis. She was born May 23, 1940 in Bay City, TX to the late Harris "Zeb" Milner and Verda Ray Townley Milner. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1958 and then attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville. The summer after graduating college she married the love of her life Carl Franklin Salas and began her teaching career at Bay City High School. She taught at Bay City High until she retired in 2004. She was beloved by her students and influenced them to be the best that they could be.
Sallie loved her hometown Bay City and was active in many community organizations. She was a lifelong member of the 1st United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for the Susanna Wesley Class for many years. She was also a charter member of the Mary Ralph Marsh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Her sweet spirit and strength through her battle with MS amazed all of the people she knew. Sallie will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She never met a stranger and loved people. She was an inspiration and great friend to many.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Franklin Salas and her brother John William Milner. Survivors include daughter Carla Ray Salas of Austin, TX; son Ben Harris Salas of Nacogdoches, TX; and granddaughter Kelsi Salas also of Nacogdoches, TX.
The family wants to express their appreciation to the staff at Matagorda House Nursing Home for the care she was given over the last 4 years.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 5PM until 7PM Friday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 4:00 PM Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Russ Munch officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rex Bass, Martin Morales, Ricky Zarate, Dr. John Bunk, Norman May, and Garlan Hinman.
