Ruby Catherine Castle Backen, 87, left her home in Sweeny to be with her Lord on December 12, 2006. She married Roy Bracken on November 7, 1942. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. As a member of First Baptist in Sweeny for 46 years, she served her Lord wherever needed; taught Mission Friends and Girls In Actions; and in her later years, participated in the Kitchen Band. She was also involved in the community as a charter member of the Pink Ladies, a member of the Rebekah Lodge and as den mother for the Cub Scouts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Eleanor Church, her sister Vivian Cantrell, infant son Larry Keith Backen and infant daughter Cindi Gail Backen.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Roy Keith Backen of Sweeny; sons and daughters-in-law Rod & Lynda Backen of San Angelo and Terry & Sheila Backen of Sweeny; grandchildren Stacy, Sarah, Ryan and Lindsey Backen.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday, December 15, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Sweeny with Rev. Jeryl Watkins officiating. Interment will follow at the Palacios Cemetery in Palacios. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5PM-7PM at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Final Arrangements entrusted to Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. 979-245-4613
