Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and enduring love that we announce the passing of Rosie Marie Burkett, 87, of Pearland, Texas, who went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 6, 2025. A devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Rosie's life was a beautiful reflection of faith, family, and compassion. She now resides permanently in heaven, where she is at peace with the Lord.

Born on January 11, 1938, in Cedar Lane, Texas, Rosie was the daughter of the late Lewis Mack Moon and Velma Shepard Moon. She grew up in Cedar Lane and graduated from Van Vleck High School, Class of 1956. On September 6, 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, Melvin Gene Burkett, and together they shared 57 wonderful years of marriage until his passing.

Rosie, affectionately known by many names—"Mom," "Mama," "Grandma," "Mrs. B." and "Tootsie"—was the heart of her family. She had a deep love for working with children, serving faithfully as a Sunday School teacher and actively supporting her sons in Scouts, little league football, and basketball. You could often hear her cheering on her sons with her signature cowbell and southern belle accent, adding her special brand of love to every game.

Professionally, Rosie dedicated 15 years to the Pearland School District, followed by 13 years at Resource Staffing, where she formed lasting friendships and was admired for her work ethic and warmth.

In her spare time, Rosie found joy and peace in Bible study, where her faith continued to grow throughout her life. She also enjoyed making memory albums, hunting for treasures at garage sales, and reading. Her delight for family, faith, and simple joys created a home full of warmth, laughter, and cherished memories.

Rosie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Melvin Gene Burkett; her parents, Lewis and Velma Moon; her brothers, Vernon Gene Moon (and wife Gerry) and Charles David Moon (and wife Emma); and T.J. Moon (and wife Clara); and her beloved son, Kent Douglas Burkett. She is survived by her son, Bret Howard Burkett and wife Linda Burkett of Porter, Texas; daughter-in-law, Brandy Burkett of Pearland, Texas; and her treasured grandchildren: Daniel, Kaitlynn, Jordan, and Skyler Burkett. She also leaves behind her sister, Carol Staten and husband Robert of Angleton, Texas; her brother, Donald Moon of Fischer, Texas, and his fiancée Susie Essary of Lake Jackson, Texas; along with many extended family members, all of whom she adored.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, Texas, followed by funeral services at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Tyler McKinney. Interment to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shadycrest Baptist Church Building Fund, 3017 Yost Blvd, Pearland, Texas 77581.

Rosie's legacy is one of love, faith, and selflessness. She will be remembered not only for the roles she held but for the warmth, wisdom, and unconditional love she offered to everyone she knew. Though she may be gone from our sight, her light continues to shine in the hearts of those who were blessed to be part of her life. Now, she resides in the eternal peace of heaven, forever in the presence of her Lord.

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens."

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.  2 Corinthians 13:14 NIV
