Master Sergeant Robert E. Sherman, Sr. (U.S. Army Ret.) departed this earth on April 28th, 2010 to rejoin his many comrades in arms on the field of honor of the Houston National Cemetery. His ashes will be interred with those of his beloved wife and son. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years Barbara Chisholm Sherman. Barbara and Robert married in March 1945 and she served along side her husband as a soldier's wife raising three children, often alone during his many overseas tours of duty. A son, Ralph Sherman who was a veteran of the U.S Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and the U.S.S. Eisenhower during the Vietnam conflict also preceded him in death. Robert served his country for twenty-seven years as an active duty soldier and another eight years as an inactive reservist. He answered the call of duty in March of 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and retired in April of 1969. His overseas tours included North Africa and Italy; two years in Korea; Germany, Japan, and Thailand during the Vietnam Conflict. His awards include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Three Army commendation Medals, and Twenty-four years of Good Conduct Medals. He was a graduate of Towson State University of Baltimore, Maryland where he received a bachelor's degree in Education. He served as an ROTC instructor at Temple University of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for three years. Sergeant Sherman chose to spend his final years of retirement enjoying the quiet life of small town Bay City.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Huftalen and her children, Steve and Courtney, by a daughter-in-law, Pam Davis and her children, Barbara, Brynna, Austin, and Bryan, and a son, Robert, Jr. as well as two brothers, Ralph and Olin Sherman and a sister, Clarice Tuck. Arrangements are under the direction of Bay City Funeral Home.
