Richard Alvarez Garcia, 89, of Bay City passed away on February 1, 2016. He was born on February 7, 1926 in Riviera, TX to the late Santiago and Enriqueta Garcia. He served in WWII in the Army 10th Mountain Division, 528th Field Artillery Battalion. He was honorably discharged on April 24, 1946. He is a 4th generation descendent of The Angel of Goliad. A lifetime resident of Bay City, an original builder of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, a member of the American GI Forum and De Colores (church community action group) also, in his later years sang in the church choir. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 29 years where he retired on September 30, 1988.
He is survived by his wife: Alice "Baby" Garcia; 3 sons: Rudy, Richard Jr, and David Garcia; 2 sisters: Celia Mata and Lydia Garcia; brother: Adam Garcia; 2 Granddaughters: Carisa Garcia and Jenny Huerta; 2 grandsons: Richard Santiago III and Christopher David Garcia; great grandchildren: Anthony, Alyiah and Morgan Garcia, Kobi Alloway, Jae Mary and Lyndon Whitfield, Miranda Huerta and Vincent Borrego.
The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday February 7, 2016 with a 6:00 PM Rosary at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Mass will be 10:00 AM Monday February 8, 2016 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Monsignor Gerry Cernoch officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery on Golden Avenue.
