Rachel Lee Horton, 89, of Cedar Lane passed away June 2, 2007. She was born January 4, 1918 in Big Cedar, Oklahoma to the late Roy Levi and Melissie C. Marrow Miller.
She was raised in the Kiamichi Valley on the Oklahoma frontier. Her family would settle an area and as others moved in and around them they again moved and resettled, staying just on the edge of the frontier. In 1932 they moved to South Texas and settled in the Cedar Lane area where she spent the rest of her life ranching. She married James Oliver Horton on Jan. 22, 1936. He preceded her in death in 1965.
Over a span of 30 years she cared for the elderly members of her family while ranching, gardening and working with her hands. She could literally take nothing and turn it into something useful. She was an active member of the Cedar Lane Baptist Church and taught 4th, 5th & 6th graders in Church Training for many years.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law Hershel Ray and Lynda Horton of Cedar Lane; two grandchildren and their spouses Virginia Lee & Joseph Lamb and Dennis Ray & Stacey Horton; four great grandchildren Melissa Horton Willy & husband Christopher, Matthew Clay Lamb, Ayden Wesley Horton and Garrett Oliver Horton and one great great grandchild Nicholas Isaac Willy. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters Elsie Gibbens and Naomi Stevens; brother Dewey Miller and an infant brother.
