REGINALDE COURTNEY CULPEPPER, better known as R.C. or Cully, passed away at his home in Sweeny, Texas on June 27, 2010 at the age of 99. R.C. was born in Childress, Texas on January 20, 1911 and moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma shortly thereafter. At age 16, he went to work for Phillips Petroleum in Okmulgee and transferred to the Sweeny refinery in 1947. R.C. retired from the company in 1962 after 46 years of service and then spent three additional years on contract with Phillips in London. He married Ebba Veneta (Betty) Parker, at age 17 in Okmulgee in 1928.
They were married just short of 70 years when she passed away in January 1998. R.C. was also preceded in death by two sons, Wayne & Ronald Dexter Culpepper. He is survived by his son, James Courtney Culpepper, his wife Janette, eight grandchildren including Cory Culpepper Posell and husband Scott Posell, Kimberly Ann Culpepper, Dianne Gallagher and husband Joe, Becca Dwyer, Robin Wise and husband Kyle, daughter-in-law Julia Mason, Marnie Lynn Innocencio and husband Joe, Rebecca Powell and husband Tim, Christopher Culpepper and thirteen great grand children.
R.C. was active in the community, volunteering his time in assisting many friends with home and automobile repair needs. He was also very active at the Methodist Church, including helping to build the sanctuary and was a founding board member of the Sweeny Hospital. Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 2nd at the Sweeny Cemetery, followed by a celebration of his life at First United Methodist Church in Sweeny, 207 E 1st Street at 11:00 a.m. Friends are welcome to attend the burial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in his name to The Center Foundation - Serving Persons with Mental Retardation, 3550 West Dallas, Houston, Texas 77019, or to AMED Community Hospice, 8901 E.F. Lowry Expressway, Suite B, Texas City, Texas, 77591. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home at 2313 Avenue I in Bay City, Texas is handling the arrangements and visitation will be held Thursday, July 1st from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
