Quentin Eugene Watkins, 78, passed away on November 4, 2014. He was born on June 14, 1936, in Bay City, Texas, to the late Pettus V. Watkins and Ethel McKenzie Watkins.
Quentin graduated from Bay City High School where he excelled in track and football, then on to Texas Western College in El Paso, Texas, where he lettered his freshman year. He had the honor of playing in two Sun Bowl games while at Texas Western. In 2004, Quentin was proud to be inducted into the Bay City Blackcat Hall of Fame.
Quentin retired from Celanese Chemical Company in Bay City, Texas, after thirty years of dedicated service, but he did not retire from his love of ranching. His hobbies included fishing, golfing and traveling. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bay City.
Quentin was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Doris Watkins, daughter, Vickie Watkins Philbrick and husband, Rick, of Stuart, Florida, and son, Kenneth Watkins and wife, Misty, of Pearland, Texas; six grandchildren, Brooks and Kristen Philbrick; and Brody, Blake, Connor and Luke Watkins; seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his sisters, Pettus Watkins Janise and husband, Marcell, of Bay City, Betsy Watkins Hughes and husband, Randy, of Cypress, Texas; extended family, sister-in-law, Evelyn Clarke of Corpus Christi and brother-in-law, Bernard Graham of Bay City, Texas.
Quentin was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack Watkins, and sister, Bonnie Watkins Conklin.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home on Friday, November 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at 2:00 p.m, at First Baptist Church, 2321 Ave. F, Bay City, Texas, with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers are Bill Johnson, Carroll Leavell, Gerald Witt, Bruce Graham, Marcell Janise, Rick Philbrick and Marvin Harvel.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Nurses and Staff at The Legacy Campus and Matagorda Regional Medical Center for their loving care and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that friends and family consider contributions to Bay City Little League, as Quentin coached quite a few young Bay City children over the years and believed in the power and value of organized sports in their young lives.
