Obituary

Norman Winston Roberson, 78, went to be with his Lord, Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Kindred Hospital in Sugar Land.

He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Shelby (Wooley) Roberson; his son Gary Roberson and wife Beth; his son David Roberson; daughter Karen Sue Roberson, granddaughter Karen Alford and husband Lang; grandson Jonathan Roberson and wife Lauren; 5 great-grandchildren. Norman was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Dorothy Frietsch.

Norman was born March 22, 1938 in Gladewater, TX to Henry and Bernice (Schlaht) Roberson. In the early 1950's, the family moved to Humble Camp in Sugar Valley where he attended school at Van Vleck I.S.D. During his school years, he also attended Peacock Military Academy in San Antonio and graduated high school from Allen Military Academy in Bryan. In 1956, he graduated from Wharton County Junior College. Shortly after in 1958, he married Shelby Wooley at First Baptist Church, Van Vleck. He then continued his education, receiving a bachelor's degree in economics from Sam Houston State in 1960 and his master's degree in economics from Texas A&I in Kingsville in 1962. He went on to complete post graduate hours toward a doctorate in economics at Oklahoma University in Norman and North Texas State in Denton.

In 1965, he began his teaching career at Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he taught economics. In 1974, he returned to Van Vleck and worked in the oil industry. A few years later in 1987, he joined the teaching staff at Van Vleck I.S.D. Norman worked from 1987-1989 at Van Vleck Junior High as a math teacher and from 1989-2000 at Van Vleck High School as a history teacher. He spent 11 years teaching the politics of government and the values of understanding economics, stressing the importance of saving money to his students.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at First Baptist Church, Van Vleck at 2:00 p.m., with Brother Bob Hobbins officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Van Vleck.
