Myra Maurice Danner Brhlik, 91, of Palacios passed away February 14, 2022. She was born January 13, 1931 in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Samuel Maurice Danner and Opal Joyce Cooke Danner.
The family moved to Texas in 1940 where her father worked for H. B. Zachary Co. and were 1 of 9 families living in the Deutschburg Community at the Francitas Gas Company houses.
Myra attended and graduated from Palacios High School. She was active in sports, playing volleyball and softball and was elected head cheer leader for the Shark football teams. She attended Victoria Junior College for 1 year and spent 1 year at Breckenridge School of Nursing in Austin, leaving when her love, F. P. "Sonny" Brhlik asked her to quit and marry him. To this union was born F. P. "Buddy" Brhlik, Jr. and Russell Maurice "Rusty" Brhlik.
Myra went to work when Buddy and Rusty were in grades 3 and 5 for G. T. Brooking, first at East Bay Lumber Company, then Matagorda Real Estate Finance Company. When it was dissolved, she then was employed as secretary and bookkeeper for Mr. and Mrs. Brooking. After their deaths she worked for their nephew Jimmy Hayes and wife Kathryn. After Kathryn's death the office was closed but Myra remained in the employment of the Hayes' twin daughters Sallie Hayes McBrier and Billie Hayes Spector taking care of the books for the J7 Ranch, owned by the Brooking Estate, located in Jackson County.
Myra enjoyed people and being involved in social and community activities. She was the Financial Secretary and Memorial Secretary for First United Methodist church for many years, past president and member of Harmonie Club, past president and member of Alpha Club, served as director of Palacios Library, Palacios Economic Development Corporation, served several terms as director of Palacios Chamber of Commerce, was past president and director of Palacios Medical Foundation, past secretary and director Palacios Community Medical Center, member of the PCMC Blue Belle volunteers, was a member of the Beautification Committee when they raised funds to purchase the pavers, park benches and pole light for the downtown city park, was awarded Distinguished Alumni of Palacios Independent School District in May 2005 and was selected Woman of the Year by Palacios Chamber of Commerce in 1990. She was the recipient of the George Holst Award in 1998 by the Matagorda County EDC. She also served 2 years on Matagorda County Historical Commission and enjoyed the search for old cemeteries during that time. She served on Beautification Committee that raised money to beautify the downtown city park, served on the First Street Pier Committee that raised money to build the fishing pier and parking space. She met and made many new friends during this time and during the 10 years her husband F. P. "Sonny" Brhlik served as Pct. #3 county commissioner.
Myra was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son R. M. "Rusty" Brhlik, daughter-in-law Marcy Brhlik and sister Anita Joyce Frankson.
She is survived by son F. P. "Buddy" Brhlik and wife Susan; daughter-in-law Chyrl Brhlik; grandchildren Ryan Alan, Stephanie Denise and husband John, Joe Paul and Kristi Lee and step-granddaughters Kelsey Heaton, Katie Heaton and Marley Bryant.
She had a strong Christian faith and never failed to thank the Lord each day for her many blessings.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church in Palacios. Funeral service will be at 3:00 PM with Rev. David Moreno officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery. Pallbearers are Joe Brhlik, Ryan Brhlik, Jim Frankson, Sam Frankson, Craig Wallis and Chipper Holt. Honorary pallbearers are Joe Kana, Dan Tucker and Ken Johnson.
