Obituary

Maurilio “Willo” R. Rodriguez, 92, of Palacios, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 27, 2026. He was born on September 13, 1933, in Olivia, TX to Juan and Manuela Rodriguez.

Willo graduated from Palacios High School in 1951, where he proudly played baseball, football, track, and tennis. His love for sports continued through his adult life, he could be found on the golf course or jogging around the city by the sea. He ran his first marathon at age 55 and played golf courses throughout the state of Texas, sharing his love for golf with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After retiring from Alcoa, he could often be found cheering on the Sharks and Sharkettes at Palacios High School sporting events. He had recently obtained his Senior Shark Lifetime Athletic Pass — a true testament to his lifelong dedication to sports and school spirit.

He served his country in the United States Air Force and was Honorably Discharged in 1959. During his time in the Air Force, he continued his passion for athletics by playing baseball for the US Air Force Team in Paris, France. On August 21, 1958, he married the love of his life, Frances Perez, beginning a beautiful marriage filled with faith, devotion, and family.

Willo was a faithful member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church for 65 years. He served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years and was a pillar of both his parish and the wider community. Known for his deep faith and gentle spirit, he was often called upon to pray for fellow parishioners in times of need. He was also a devoted leader of “Discípulos en Mision,” guiding others in faith and service.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Frances Perez Rodriguez; his daughters, Kathy Jo Rodriguez and Nita Diaz; his brother, Lupe Rodriguez; and his sisters, Leandra Rodriguez and Isabel Ramos.

He is survived by his loving children, Janet “GiGi” Rodriguez and Mario Rodriguez (Veronica); his cherished grandchildren, JD Diaz (Jessica), Nikki Rodriguez (David), Amy Freeze (Kody), and Adrian Rodriguez (Marie); and his eight great-grandchildren, Andrew, Kyrie, Kamryn, and Anderson Freeze, Jenna, Bella, and Jett Diaz and Mia Rodriguez. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, and parishioners who will deeply miss his steady presence and faithful heart.

Pallbearers will be JD Diaz, Jett Diaz, Adrian Rodriguez, David Gutierrez, Kody Freeze, Andrew Freeze, Anderson Freeze, and Tito Ramos.

Willo’s legacy of faith, family, service, and community will live on in all who knew and loved him.
