Loufine Houck, born on July 4, 1943, passed away Peacefully on May 31, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Granite, OK to the late Lester Lloyd “Hap” Cook and Evalyn Loufine Fisher Cook.
She grew up and attended school in Reed, OK. She married Leonard Gary Houck on April 17, 1961, and they cherished 65 years together. In addition to being a wife, mother, Nana and overall caregiver, she worked in the cafeteria at both Edison Elementary and Mangum High School. She then took a position as an Aide working with Special Education and Remedial Reading Students. She served as an Aid to Carol Hardin and Roberta Williams. The students adored her. After her three children graduated, she left the school district to stay at home to help raise her grandchildren. It was then that she completed her GED and attended a 3- course cake decorating class at Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, all within a year. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren fiercely. While essentially raising 3 generations of her own, often there were nieces, nephews, her cousin’s children and children from her church family thrown into the mix. She adored them all and enjoyed cooking and baking for them. Loufine also worked alongside her husband, Gary on the Farm and drilling water wells. During summer break from school, you could find her on the swather cutting hay at their farm as well as for neighboring farmers. She kept her huge yard well-manicured, flowers blooming and the garden planted and harvested, home canning and freezing everything to feed her family. Her sweet pickles and relish were well sought after. For the past 40+ years everyone has called on her for birthdays, showers, anniversaries, weddings or just because. Her cakes were delicious and beautifully decorated. Cupcakes, cookies, pies or full meals were prepared with skill and love. “Nana” was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. That faith was passed on to her family and has carried all of us through life’s battles, including her final one.
Survivors include her husband Gary Houck; children Sherman Houck, Jennifer Slaton (Steven) and Eric Houck; sister Lorene Sherrill; grandchildren Kenneth Slaton (Ashley), Andy Slaton (Megan), Hannah Houck Warner (Austin), Mary Houck and Lily Houck; great grandchildren Kelli Slaton, Sam Slaton, Collin Slaton, Brennan Slaton, Walker Jack Warner and Millie Lou Warner as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, infant son Gary Don Houck, brother Bennie Cook, brother-in-law R. L. Sherrill and sister-in-law Sharon Cook.
