Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Fetterly Friery, 93, of Houston (formerly of Palacios), passed away on August 20, 2007 in the Cy-Fair Medical Center in Houston. She was born April 18, 1914, in Yoakum, TX to Elizabeth Haemmerlin Fetterly and William Amos Fetterly. She went to Palacios in 1935 and lived there until 1973. She returned in 1980 and moved to Houston for medical reasons in 2002. She always felt that Palacios was her home.

Mrs. Friery graduated from Baird High School; received her Bachelors degree from North Texas State University and her Master's degree from the University of Houston. She taught school in Palacios for 27 years between 1935 through 1973. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she served as a Communion Steward, Sunday School teacher, played the organ and piano for many years, and was active in the U.M.W.; a member of the Order of Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron three times; and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma from 1964 until 1975; a member of the Athena Club; a member of the Retired Teachers Association; organized and sponsored the F.T.A.; a member of the Matagorda Historical Association and served several terms on the Matagorda Historical Commission. She also enjoyed being a mentor after she retired from teaching.

She is survived by her daughters: Mary Louise Friery of Houston, TX and Betty Ann Friery Kent of Beaver, WV; her son-in-law: Frank N. Kent; grandson: Thomas Gregory Kent and his wife Barbara; granddaughter: Stacey LeAnn Kent; great grandson: Nathaniel Gregory Kent; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom E. Friery, in 1967; her parents, Elizabeth and William Amos Fetterly; her brother, William Amos Fetterly, Jr.; and her sister Ida Louise Anderson.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 25, 2007, at the Palacios Cemetery with Rev. June White officiating. Burial will be in the Palacios Cemetery.
