Martha Kristek Hickl Huston of Wadsworth, Texas passed away on Monday, November 28, 2016. She was born in Holman Fayette County Texas on July 10, 1921 to Emil Kristek and Christine Pratka Kristek.
In 1934 Martha and her parents moved to El Maton. She attended Blessing public school and graduated as Valedictorian in 1939. A scholarship enabled her to attend Smalley Commercial College in Houston, Texas. after which she went to work for J.G. Long Co. as a bookkeeper. In July of 1941 she married Edward Hickl. The bombing of Pearl Harbor in December, resulted in changes in their life plans. While he was in the China-Burma-India theatre of war, she went to work for the War Department as a civilian payroll clerk at Camp Hulen at Palacios, Ellington Field near Houston, and after 28 months, her husband returned and went to work at Camp White in Medford, Oregon. They returned to Bay City and started a family. Twelve years later, an opportunity presented itself to go back to office work as secretary-bookkeeper at Van Vleck ISD. This was followed by bookkeeper at Goodyear Service Store, Matagorda Co. District Clerk's office, part time County Tax and Co. clerk's office and Hugh Harper Realty Associate until Ed died in an accident in 1981.
Martha married Tom Huston in 1985, and they developed an R. V. lifestyle which took them all over the U.S. and parts of Canada. They lived in Durango, Colorado for 14 summers and in Mesa, Arizona for 8 winters until they returned to Wadsworth, Texas and made many friends along the way. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas, KJZT #100, Catholic Union of Texas, KJT, Life member of VFW Post 2438, and Holy Cross Altar Society.
Martha is survived by her husband Tom M. Huston of Wadsworth; son Edward L. Hickl Jr. & wife Barbara of Houston & Canyon Lake, Texas daughter-in-law, Pam Hickl of Bastrop, daughter, Cynthia Hickl Hahn & husband Charles of Canyon Lake, Texas, step daughter Darlene Huston of Richwood, Texas; grandchildren, Ed Hickl III, Amy Hickl, Traci Jackson and husband Michael, Randy Hickl & wife Emily, Shannon Allen and husband Jon, Chad Hahn and wife Shannon, and Ashley Hahn. Step-grandchildren, Matthew Huston, Michelle Huston and Mark Huston; 10 great grandchildren and 2 step great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Edward Hickl , Sr., son Melvin Joe Hickl, and stepson Tommy Huston Jr.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 1 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home from 5:00-8:00P.M. with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00P.M. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 2, 2016 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City with Fr. Greg Korenek celebrant and Fr. Michael Rother con-celebrant. The rite of committal will be in Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers are Randy Hickl, Mark Allen Huston, Larry Browning and Raymond Mills. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross School Foundation, cancer or heart research, or the donor's charity of choice.
