Marilyn Jeannette Mitchell, 77, of Palacios returned to the angels Friday, October 5, 2012 in Austin. She was born April 26, 1935 in Palacios, Texas to the late Guy Winfred & Wilma Ezell Johnson. Marilyn was Valedictorian of her Palacios High School graduating class and went on to attend the University of Texas, where she met her husband, Raymond Allen "Mitch" Mitchell whom she married in Palacios on August 31, 1957. Mitch and Marilyn lived in Houston until they retired and returned to Marilyn's beloved Palacios. Marilyn was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Palacios, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Marilyn was guided by God and love for family, friends and community and will be remembered for her Love of Life and a smile on her face. She welcomed anyone she met with an open heart and made them feel welcome. Everyone who knew her knows that she cared more about her friends and family than she did herself and was always more interested in their lives than talking about her own. She also loved a good game of dominoes and Texas Hold 'Em. Marilyn dedicated numerous hours on projects she held dear to her which included the Palacios Library, The Live Poets Society, the First Street Bridge, Local Politics, and The Robert Duran Food Pantry. She was very accomplished throughout her life and most recently won the Senior Spelling Bee in March 2012 in Austin.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter: Julie Weiss & husband Brett; son: Brett Mitchell; grandson: Michael Worsham; brother: Don Johnson & wife Donna; 2 nephews: Jeff Johnson and Matt Johnson; sister-in-law: Nancy McCarley & husband Bob; 2 nieces: Lee Ann McCarley and Laurie Sistak. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Raymond Allen Mitchell in 2010.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church of Palacios with Rev. David King officiating.
