Margaret G. Treybig Martin of Bay City passed away on March 2, 2009 at the age of 81. She was born on June 3, 1927, at her grandmother's house in Eagle Lake, to the late Milton Hugo and Gladys Kohleffel Treybig. Margaret was proud of her German heritage and of being a fifth generation Texan.
Margaret moved to Bay City in 1940 and was a graduate of Bay City High School's class of 1945. During her senior year she met her future husband, Wilbur "Bill" Martin, at a USO sponsored dance. The Army had stationed Bill in nearby Palacios. After one dance, Bill knew he could not return to his native Connecticut. They married in Galveston on June 10, 1945, and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary before Bill's death in 2000.
She is survived by her daughters, Melanie Martin of Bay City and Cindy McNeel and husband Randy of Austin; brothers, James Treybig and wife Lorraine of Palacios, Harry Lee Treybig and wife Gloria of Needville; a sister, Katherine Hardin and husband Arlin of Montgomery. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, H.L. Martin Jr. and wife Eleanor of Fairfield, Conn.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Wanas and husband Joe of Stratford, Conn.; sister-in-law, Anna Karcsmar of Henderson, Nev.; and cousins, Mark and Sharon Halstead of Bridgeport, Conn.
Margaret was a devout Christian and lived a life that fully reflected her faith.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City for over 60 years and enjoyed her many long-time friends in the Gleaners Sunday School Class. During her professional career, she worked at the Matagorda County Clerks Office and in the insurance agency business for many years. After her retirement, Margaret was an avid walker and was actively involved in the Matagorda County Birding and Nature Center.
A time of visitation with the family will be held from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today, March 4, at the Bay City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 5 at the First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday March 5 at the Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.
Pallbearers will include Bennie Herman Schramm, David Stock, Mike Treybig, Allen Cumbie, Billy Mann, and Andy Anderson.
Honorary pallbearers will be William "Billy" Treybig, Walter Treybig Jr., Leland Treybig, Joe Stock, Wayne Michael, Sam Maglitto, and the members of the Gleaners Sunday School Class.
Margaret's family would like to thank their special friends and caregivers, Mary Durgan, LVN, Mary Aguilar, Mary Baker, Debbie Beck, Zelma Davidson, and Sandra Reed.
