Spencer Lowell Johnson of Palacios passed away peacefully on October 22, 2017 at the age of 89. He was born January 31st, 1928 on the Chamblee farm in the countryside outside of Palacios to the late S. L. Johnson and Mabel Chamblee Johnson.
Lowell is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Carolyn Bates Johnson, daughter Karen Johnson Tilton, son-in-law Gary Tilton, son Ronnie Johnson, daughter-in-law Susan Cooper Johnson. He is also survived by Brother-in-law Ted Bates Jr, spouse Joan Bates, niece Allison Bates Welsh, spouse Billy Welsh and nieces Lynn Wright and Karen Riva.
Lowell excelled in sports, especially baseball, drawing the interest of the Boston Braves professional baseball team and later was a major force for the VFW Pirates in the "Hug the Coast Highway" league. He continued to love sports for the rest of his life and enjoyed coaching little league and teen league baseball teams.
Upon completing advanced courses, Lowell worked for ALCOA in Point Comfort, retiring after 33 years. After retirement, he started his own machine shop where he served the farmers, shrimpers and other businesses around the Palacios area until early 2017.
A faithful member of the the First United Methodist Church of Palacios, Lowell served as a sponsor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship Group and the Board of Trustees. His skills as a machinist served the congregation well in the fabrication of the chandelier lights for the new sanctuary in 1963 after the old one was destroyed by hurricane Carla.
Lowell loved the land and enjoyed countless hours tending to his pecan orchard. He mastered the grafting process and shared his knowledge with anyone who showed interest. An avid weather buff, friends and neighbors could always count on Lowell to let them know when the skies were about to change.
Visitation will be Wednesday October 25th from 5pm - 7pm at the Palacios Funeral Home in Palacios. Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Thursday October 26th at the First United Methodist Church of Palacios with Interment immediately following at the Palacios Cemetery. Following the interment, the family will receive friends and relatives at Weimar Hall.
Pallbearers: Jerry Washington, Guy "Nubbin" Chamblee, Gary Chamblee, Robert Glenn, Lonnie "Buddy" Laslie, Mark Bates. Honorary Pallbearers: Vernon Bates, Jr., Fred Perkins, Frank Paul "Buddy" Brhlik, Chipper Holt, Larry Baird, Joe Jenkins.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Palacios Volunteer Fire Department and Houston Hospice.
