LOVINER HEBERT NELSON, 89, of Bay City, Texas was surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 7, 2015 when she passed peacefully into the eternally loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Loviner was born in Hackberry, Louisiana on January 1, 1926 to Noah and Sophie Hebert. She graduated in a class of twelve students in 1942 from Hackberry High School and later attended Vincent Business College and Indiana University.
In 1946, she met her future husband, Fordney Nelson, and they were married on September 21, 1946 in Sulphur, Louisiana. After transfers to Lake Charles, Houston, and Robstown, Texas, they moved to Bay City in 1956 where Loviner would raise her family and begin her many years of dedicated service to the Bay City community.
She volunteered in the Government Food Surplus Program and was active in Red Cross fund-raising and the Foreign Student Exchange program. As a member of the Junior Service League she helped to establish a local youth center and was a Pink Lady at the hospital. Loviner also taught CCD religion classes at Holy Cross and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Churches. Throughout her life she supported numerous charitable causes.
Loviner loved spending quiet time at her second home on Matagorda Beach and as a voracious reader, and with her passion of expanding knowledge through books, she was lead into volunteer work at the Bay City Public Library for over three and a half decades. In November 2014, she was awarded the first annual "Loviner H. Nelson Award" for "Recognition of Selflessness and Dedication to the Bay City Public Library".
Loviner was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, F.L. Nelson. She is survived by her children, David Nelson and his wife Brenda of Austin, Texas; Doug Nelson and his wife Marilee of Hunt, Texas; and Lynn Nelson Monteith and her husband Dorrance of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Douglas Nelson Jr, Jessica Jackson, Allison Evans, Jayna DuBose, and Nelson Monteith, and her great-grandchildren, Samuel Nelson, Luke Nelson, and Ford DuBose.
Loviner's service will be held on Saturday, February 14th at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1412 12th Street, Bay City, Texas with Msgr. Gerry Cernoch officiating. Immediately following, will be a graveside service at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation will be Friday, February 13th from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, 2313 Ave I, Bay City, Texas. Pallbearers are Nelson Monteith, Will Evans, Chad DuBose, Kelly Teague, William Teague and Kent Seifert. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1412 12th Street, Bay City, Texas 77414 or the charity of your choice.
