LaVerne Fulton Culver, 85 of Matagorda, went to be with the Lord on July 5, 2017. She was born in Wharton on July, 23, 1931 to Lenord and Elsie Schoenfield and was adopted by Charles and Helen Fulton.
On August 5, 1950 she married Ray Culver of Matagorda, and in one month would have celebrated 67 years together. LaVerne loved being a homemaker and was known for her great cooking and friendship to others. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a sweet woman who cherished life and the people of Matagorda. She was a charitable woman who believed in giving back and did so by donating to various charities. Her faith was larger than a mustard seed and she instilled that faith in her family and friends. She was a lifetime member of the Matagorda United Methodist Church where she served on multiple committees, taught children's bible school and Sunday School. She was a proud member of The United Methodist Women, the VFW Women's Auxiliary, the Matagorda Historical Society, and the Matagorda Cemetery Association. LaVerne was one of the founding members of the Rivers End Garden Club where she enjoyed many trips to various venues with her friends and she was awarded countless ribbons for her floral creations.
LaVerne is preceded in death by her parents Lenord Schoenfield, Monroe and Elsie Breithaupt, Charles and Helen Fulton and Brother Milton Schoenfield. She is survived by her husband Ray Culver; daughter Sherry Culver Sprott, son-in-law L.R. Sprott; son Ray Culver, Jr., daughter-in-law Julie Allen Culver; granddaughters Haley Sprott Cantu and husband Nicholas Cantu, Hannah Sprott, Cassie Culver, and great grandson Matthew Cantu.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Matagorda United Methodist Church Post Office Box 113, Matagorda, and Texas 77457.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, Texas. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Matagorda United Methodist Church with Reverend Ann Worrell and Virgil Ichtertz officiating. Interment will follow at the Matagorda Cemetery. Pallbearers are Walter Ritz, David Allen, George Deshotels, Mike Daugherty, Jeff Davis and James "Bubba" Wilburn.
