Laura Nelle Heickmann Charlton Kling, 78, was born August 5, 1937 in Poteet, Texas. She died January 5, 2016.
Her family consisted of her father Bud Heickmann (a roughneck, a grocer for 25 years, a city patrolman for 10 years), her mother Ruby Barrow Heickmann (a teacher for 32 years), her grandmother Onie Etta Barrow (seamstress and homemaker), and a sister Mary Louise Heickmann just 17 months younger than Laura.
Laura was married twice…in 1956 at the age of 19…and in 1989 at the age of 52. She graduated 3 times: from Sweeny High School in 1955 at the age of 17…from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos at the age of 21…and from the University of Houston/Victoria in 1984 at the age of 47. She was a teacher for 32 years: 5 years in Edna, 10 years in Bay City (Tenie Holmes 2 years, McAllister Middle School 4 years, Pierce Primary 4 years) and Matagorda Elementary School 17 years. For 20 of those years she was a kindergarten teacher. Her two sons were born in 1964 when she was 27 and 1968 when she was 30.
During most of her retirement years, she lived alone in her home. The help and support she needed was provided by her neighbor and good friend Pam Morte. There were others in her support system: Mary Nairn, Bill and Ruby Charlton, Joe and Maryann Charlton, 4 grown grandchildren (Emily, Jonathan, Nathan, Clara)…and Clayton who was born in 2005. Laura was a student, scholar, writer, wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, friend, a Methodist, patriot, and a character with character. She was loyal, generous, funny, and caring. She is survived by all of the Charltons and all of the Nairns.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, her husband Charles Kling and a number of classmates and good friends.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 5PM until 7PM Friday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Sweeny. Private interment will follow at Sweeny Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kyle Nairn, Wade Nairn, Ross Nairn, Matthew McIntosh, Mitchell McIntosh, and Nathan Charlton.
