Obituary

L.J. Brister left this earth to be with his heavenly father on April 11, 2022, at the age of 88.

He was the youngest of fourteen children, born March 3, 1934 to parents Henry J. Brister and Charlsie Marshall Brister and raised on the family farm near Palacios, Texas. He married his wife Marilyn Milam Brister on November 3, 1956 and began their life together.  L. J. returned to Palacios, Texas after 20 years of service in the United States Air Force to start his second career as a commercial shrimper. He built his first boat, the "Capt. Jay", in the front yard their first year back and spent the next 50 years doing what he loved, which included the opening of West End Bait where they became well known across the state for the quality of their shrimp and croakers. He enjoyed the friendships made with all the fishermen that frequented the dock and to his last days was still answering his phone to customers asking if they had any bait for their next big trip.  He loved his family and always looked forward to attending the annual Brister Family Reunion at the lake to reminisce with his large extended family. He was a member of the Blessing American Legion, a member of the Onion Creek Masonic Lodge, and a Shriner.

L.J. was preceded in death by his parents, Henry J. and Charlsie Marshall Brister; sisters Leva Moses, Eva Norwood, Emily Harvey, Maggie Drawhorn, Johnnie Hamlin, Dorothy Hamlin, Melba McCrory, Jean LeClaire and Elaine Melling; brothers, Willie, Aaron, Elton, and Marshall.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marilyn Brister, son and daughter-in-law, Jay Brister and Yannet of League City, Texas; his daughter and son-in-law, Janet King and Rodney of Georgetown, Texas; grandchildren, Jordan Brister, Jaxson Brister, Jade Brister, Autumn Shaffer and husband Clint, Tyler Hartgrove and Tatum Hartgrove.

The family will receive relatives and friends for visitation at 12:30 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2022 at Palacios Funeral Home in Palacios, Texas. Graveside Services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Palacios Cemetery.
