Mrs. Joan Barclay Whitworth, 73, of Matagorda passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018. She was born in Gadsden, Alabama on March 21, 1945 to the late Joseph Barclay & Sarah York Work.  Joan was the wife of the late William "Bill" Whitworth for 31 years until his death in 2002.

She received her undergraduate degree from Birmingham Southern and graduate degree from the University of Houston in Mathematics. Joan taught at high schools in Alabama and Texas – completing her public high school tenure of 36 years at Tidehaven High School in El Maton, Texas.  She was also an adjunct math professor at Wharton County Junior College in Wharton and Bay City, Texas.

Joan was an excellent teacher, and was loved and appreciated by all who knew her. She and Bill loved traveling and were always on the go from Georgia to Hawaii!  Joan was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Matagorda, Texas. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), she traced her family's genealogy back to the early 1700's.   Joan was also a member of the Matagorda Garden Club, and was a board member for the Matagorda School System running uncontested for several years.

Survivors include her sister: Jennifer W. Haynes & husband Ron of Augusta, GA; nephews: Matthew Haynes and Christopher Haynes both of Augusta, GA; and niece: JoJo Healy & husband Brian of Fairhope, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother: Joseph S. Work.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda with Rev. Hoss Gwin officiating. Interment will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville, TX.

The family would like to thank Vivian & Mark Orr of Matagorda, TX for their dedication, love, and care of Joanie over the past 6 years. Also, Cody Holloway, Carolyn Dees, and the staff of Matagorda Nursing and Rehabilitation for their care while she was a resident.
