We lost a treasured jewel today.

Jewel Kelly Matthews, 96, of Bay City went peacefully to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. She was the youngest of ten children, born on July 28, 1918 in Van Zandt County, Texas to the late Doctor Spear & Ada Louise Mitchell Kelly. Jewel was a wonderful cook, very involved with her family, and served as a Girl Scout Leader as her girls were growing up. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Bay City Evening Lions Club. Jewel was a Lioness in the Bay City Lions Club, before joining the Bay City Evening Lions Club. She was very active and served in every office of the Bay City Evening Lions Club. Jewel made punch for the Rice Festival Queen Contestant Tea for 35 years.

She is survived by her loving family; 2 children: Frances Gasaway & husband Steve of Bay City and Peggy O'Brien & husband Wayne of Bay City; 4 grandchildren: Kelly Guffey & husband Tom of Brazoria, Steve Tyson Gasaway of Houston, Kacey Hamlet & husband Tim of Angleton, and Gaylynn Gasaway Standlee & husband Curtis of Bay City; 7 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and numerous other loving family members. Jewel was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 62 years: Charles D. Matthews; 7 brothers; and 2 sisters.

The Family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 12, 2015 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Bay City with Tom Guffey and Rev. Bill Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers will be: Charles Coney, Allan Green, Gary Green, Bill Newton, Mike Otis, and James Mitchell.
