Janette Lawhon Cornett Bowers, age 91, of Houston, TX went peacefully to the Lord on December 13, 2024. She was born on November 13, 1933, in Conroe, TX to the late Tot and Leslie Mae (Watkins) Lawhon.
She graduated from Tidehaven High School in El Maton, TX and earned her B.S. from Sam Houston State University and M.A. from Sul Ross State University. She taught health & physical education at Pasadena ISD, Cy-Fair ISD, and at Sul Ross before creating the adult & continuing education department at Sul Ross.
Her passion for genealogy and volunteer service was unparalleled, for which she received numerous accolades and awards. She was actively involved with and had leadership roles in Leadership Big Bend, American Cancer Society, Pilot Club International, American Legion Auxiliary, Alpine ISD Board of Trustees, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and Daughters of the American Revolution, among many other organizations, and was founding member of The Sunshine House, a senior center in Alpine, TX. She was a member of Memorial Drive Methodist Church after moving to Houston in 2011, where she served on the Board of Stewards and was Circle Chairman and President of United Methodist Women.
Janette married Richard E. "Dick" Bowers on June 3, 1967, and they settled in Alpine for 34 years where they raised their six children. They lived in Horseshoe Bay for 10 years before returning to Houston in 2010.
Janette is survived by her daughter Connie Cornett; sons, Clay (Deb) Cornett, Cole (Cathy) Cornett, and Casey (Susan) Cornett; stepdaughter Kelly (Greg) Stewart; and stepson, George (Donna) Bowers; grandchildren Chris, Amy, Colby, Colton, Charles, Vivian, Marshall, Stuart, Haley, Sidney; and great-grandchildren, Millie and Connor. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Shirley Lawhon.
A graveside service will be held at Hawley Cemetery near Blessing, TX, on December 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. by Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City, TX.
