Obituary

James Joseph Starks, 93, originally of Bay City, Texas, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at his home in Santa Fe. He was born October 9, 1931, to Jim and Agnes Starks in Old Ocean, Texas.

Dad had to leave school at an early age to work on the farm and help his family. This didn't stop him from continuing his education in the army and having a successful career in the chemical industry. He retired from Celanese Chemical in 1980 to join his brother, Aaron at Arthur Bros., Inc. and a few years later their brother Sam joined them. Dad then retired from his day job in 1996 and began one of his favorite projects, building Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Bay City, Texas. While he considered building the church his greatest honor, he was also proud to help build Baycel Federal Credit Union for Paula and "all the girls".

James is survived by his bride of 70 years, Betty Briggs Starks, two sons and their wives, Morris and Jann of Pasadena, Phil and Jackie of Santa Fe, daughter, Rhonda Shiflet of Santa Fe and bonus daughter Tina Hoskins of Angleton. He also leaves behind brother Samuel Starks and wife Jean, sisters-in-law, Blanche Starks, Rose Briggs and Doris Williams, brother-in-law Roy Briggs and wife Karen and special nephew, J.D. Baugus, 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Landon Starks, son-in-law Kenneth Shiflet, sister Ruth Jones and husband Sam, sister Esther Evans and husband Carol and brothers Aaron Starks and Kenneth and Borden Allen.

Visitation and Funeral service will be Tuesday, November 26, 2024, with visitation from 10:00 am – 11:00 am and service beginning at 11:00 am at Apostolic Pentecostal Church, 5701 7th St., Bay City, TX 77414. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers are Jason Pierre, Matt Starks, Brandon Shiflet, Diego Gonzalez, Mark Starks and Alan Stephens. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Rieger, Jimmy McCauley and Gary Armstrong.

We believe it can be said that James Starks was the perfect example of a Godly man. He gave to anyone in need, and he thrived on helping others. Go rest high on that mountain Dad, great is your reward!
