Jack Truett Farris, 85, returned to his heavenly home on July 1, 2016 after a battle with prostate cancer and heart problems. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Truett was born to the late Alton and Erma Farris in North Zulch, TX on July 21, 1930. He was the second child of four. He was drafted into the Army in 1952, where he served in Korea. Upon returning home, Truett graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science in Photo Engraving. He worked for Southern Newspapers in three different cities, for over 30 years.
Although he was immersed in the Methodist faith from an early age, he did not accept Jesus Christ as his Savior until in his 30s. Along with his wife, Sara, he led youth groups, was a member of church boards and a deacon in the Baptist Church. Truett was blessed with a loving family. He married Sara Ann Terrell, on July 9, 1950 in her home in Monroe, GA. Truett and Sara adopted one daughter, Terrell Eleanor, born on January 1, 1965. From the very beginning, they dedicated Terrell to God and encouraged her to love God, and serve him with her whole heart.
Throughout Truett's life, he was an example of God's love through his actions. He touched many people with his giving and outreaches independently, through church, prison ministry and Gideons. Truett is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at home with his creator.
Truett is survived by his wife of sixty-five years Sara; his daughter Terrell and her husband Don Towne; his grandchildren Jacklyn Riha, and Nathanael Riha; his sister, Maggie and her husband George Parker; and his brother Maxia and his wife Rochelle Farris. His nieces and nephews with great-neices and great-nephews continue to great-great nieces and great-great nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother Keefer and his wife Naomi Farris; his brother-in-law Buzz Ryden; and his parents.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 6PM until 8PM Monday at the funeral home. Funeral services are Tuesday, July 5, 10:00 AM at Van Vleck Baptist Church. Following a reception at the church, Truett will be buried in West Sandy at the Farris Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. with sandwiches to follow at the Farris Chapel Methodist Church. The family gratefully declines flowers, but donations will be accepted at Open Door Enterprises, PO Box 569, Van Vleck, TX 77482; Gideons International, PO Box 1007, Bay City TX 77404; and Van Vleck Baptist Church, PO Box 541, Van Vleck TX 77482.
