Obituary

Isabell Louise Abrahamson Greenawalt was born on December 17, 1934, in Waterville, Ohio, to Myrtle F. Falls and Ernest Edwin Abrahamson. She married the love of her life, J.D. Greenawalt, on September 4, 1953, beginning a long and loving life together filled with family, cherished traditions, and countless wonderful memories.

Isabell made her home in the Carancahua Community for most of her life, with the exception of a short time spent in Montana while J.D. served in the United States Air Force. The Carancahua Community remained home to Isabell, where she built a life centered on her family and things she loved most.

Family was the heart of Isabell's world. She loved her children and grandchildren immensely and expressed that love in countless ways, especially through her cooking. Sunday dinners were a treasured family tradition, with wonderful Southern meals prepared with love and served alongside stories that could keep everyone gathered around the table long after the meal was finished. Isabell will be remembered for her delicious home-cooked meals and the warmth and laughter she brought to every family gathering.

Her desserts were legendary, especially her roly poly and coconut, chocolate, and mincemeat pies. The mincemeat pie was a particular favorite of J.D.'s, one more example of the many thoughtful ways she cared for the people she loved. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, her table a place of connection, and her recipes and stories a lasting part of her family's heritage.

Isabell was also a talented seamstress who found joy in creating beautiful heirlooms for her family. She loved sewing baby quilts, embroidering, crocheting, and making clothing. Through her skilled hands, she created treasured keepsakes for her family.

Isabell and J.D. shared a long life together, and some of their happiest times were spent traveling across South Texas to bird dog trials. Those days were filled with a shared passion and the simple pleasures of being together. J.D. was the love of her life, and their 67 years together were a testament to a deep and enduring commitment.

In addition to her devotion to family, Isabell spent many years serving as a substitute teacher in the Palacios Independent School District. She especially enjoyed working with the high school students, and her time in the classroom was another meaningful part of a life spent caring for and connecting with others.

Isabell was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J.D. Greenawalt; her daughter, Diane Isabell Greenawalt; her parents, Myrtle F. Falls and Ernest Edwin Abrahamson; her sister, Betty Condie; and her brothers, Ernest B. Abrahamson and Lawrence F. Abrahamson; and granddaughter April Renee Carville Greenawalt.

She is survived by her children, James Dwayne Greenawalt and his wife, Beverly, Mark Stephen Greenawalt and his wife Linda, and Susan Leigh Greenawalt; and her grandchildren, Mark Ryan Greenawalt, Amy Lynn Greenawalt Montes and her husband, Tony, J.D. Greenawalt and his wife, Stacy, Kristen Greenawalt Kubecka and her husband, Dane, and Darren Samora. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Hannah Montes, Matthew Montes, Abby Montes, Sadie Montes, Brooke Greenawalt, Shelby Greenawalt, Luke Greenawalt, Bailey Kubecka, and Clint Kubecka. Her family was her greatest joy, and the love she gave them will continue through the generations.

Isabell leaves behind a legacy of love, family traditions, wonderful meals, cherished stories, handmade treasures, and memories that will be held close for years to come. She will be remembered around Sunday dinner tables, in the familiar flavors of her favorite pies, in the stories shared among family, and in the many ways she made those she loved feel cared for.

Isabell was also a woman of deep faith. It helped sustain her through life trials and was a source of strength and inspiration. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she poured into her family and the life she shared with J.D. will never be forgotten. Her legacy and faith in God live on in our hearts.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at the First United Methodist Church in Palacios. Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM with Rev. Paul Klemm officiating.
