IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hollie Warren
Urban
May 25, 1945 – September 16, 2021
Hollie Warren "HW" Urban left this life on September 16, 2021 at the age of 76. He was born to Lloyde Morris and Dorothy Bankhead Urban on May 25, 1945 in Laurel, Mississippi. Dorothy passed from this life the same day. Lloyde married Mildred Bowie seven months later. Mildred Bowie Urban adopted and raised Hollie as her own. No one ever had a better Momma and Dad.
HW was preceded in death by his father, mother, momma and sister Judith. He was also preceded by all three sets of grandparents Lloyde Warren and Leona Urban, Hollie and Rosalie Bankhead and Hubert and Ada Bowie. He leaves his beloved wife of 45 years, Edith and sons Harold Leo Urban of Illinois and Willie Dean Urban of Old Ocean; 5 grandsons and 3 granddaughters. HW served his country for six years in the US Navy. After returning from the service as a non-commissioned officer (E5), he attended Stephen F. Austin for a year. In 1971 he went to work for Dow Chemical. He retired in 2001 after 30 years of service in research.
He said his life changed for the better on November 11, 1976. On that day he married his soul mate, Edith Louise Gragg. She was his reason for the rest of his life. They were married in Cedar Lane Baptist Church where they remain members. They spent the next 45 years together. How he loved his wife and boys.
After his family, he loved officiating high school sports and golf. He spent 25 years on the football field. He served as President, Vice-President and Secretary of the Gulf Coast Football Chapter of TASO (Texas Assoc. of Sports Officials). He also served 4 years on the TASO Football state Board. He spent his last years as an Observer for the Houston Football Chapter of TASO after the Gulf Coast Chapter merged with the Houston Chapter.
He and Edith loved to play golf. She was the one that got him into golf. Even when Edith couldn't play very much, she kept an eye on his game. He called her his "golf coach". It was something they could do to spend more time together outside instead of her sitting in the stands watching him.
HW was also a member of both Brazoria County Cavalry and Matagorda County Cavalry. He wanted the kids coming back for the Middle East to know they were appreciated, instead of being treated the way many Vietnam Vets and Vietnam era Vets were treated when they came home.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM Friday, September 24, 2021 at the Cedar Lane Baptist Church. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM with Rev. Mike Patterson officiating. Interment will follow at the Bowie Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Willie Urban, Harry Urban, Jr., Jason Beard, Eugene Taylor, C. I. Pray III and C. I Pray IV.
