Harry Samuel Shannon, 83, of Bay City, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010. He was born September 24, 1926 in Eastland, Texas to the late, Nancy Catherine & Baker lee Shannon Sr.. Mr. Shannon was a Lt. Colonel in the Texas Wing of the Civil Air Patrol and had recently been elected to serve a second term as a Bay City Port Commissioner. He lived for several years in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and then moved to Bay City, where he farmed rice and other crops for over 50 years. He served the community as a Boy Scout Troop leader and as President of the Matagorda County Hospital Board for a time. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and then joined the First Baptist Church after marrying Berniece Terry Shannon. After serving his country in the US Army Cavalry during WWII, he graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas.
Harry is survived by his brother and sister-in-law: Baker Lee and Nancy Shannon of Houston, and by many nieces and nephews. His beloved wife, Berniece Terry Shannon, his father and mother, Baker Lee and Nancy Catherine Shannon, and his aunt, Violet McKnight, preceded him in death.
A time of visitation with the family will be held on Friday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Bay City Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Bay City with Dr. Michael Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. Harry's family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Bay City.
