Obituary

George William "Buster" Hanna, 79, of Sweeny went to be with the Lord on July 23, 2007 with family gathered around him. He was born August 25, 1927 in Sweeny to William Voyd Hanna and Bertha Sewell Hanna Norman. He was the oldest of twelve children. He was baptized January 30, 1937 in the San Bernard River on Hwy. 35 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sweeny for 69 Years.

He married Mary Margaret Rorex on June 11, 1948 in Sweeny. He served as a Staff Sgt. in the US Army from Nov. 1950 to Oct. 1951. He also served as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class in the US Navy from 1944 to 1947. He worked for Phillips Petroleum for 18 years; served as president of Machinist Union # 1727; member of the Old Ocean Masonic Lodge # 1284, AF & AM for 53 years and served as Worshipful Master from 1960-61 and again in 1998-99; member of the Eastern Star and a member of VFW Post # 8551 in Sweeny.

He was preceded in death by his parents, babies Lane and Megan Hanna and siblings Wesley B. Hanna, Quinda Hanna, Agnes Merritt and Ray A. Hanna. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Margaret Rorex Hanna of Sweeny; sons and daughters-in-law George R. "Butch" & Karen Hanna of Sweeny, John W. Hanna of Brazoria, Mark Lester & Brenda Hanna of Sweeny and daughter Tyra Hanna of Sweeny; sisters Naomi & LaVerne Swinney of Jamesville, CA, Phyllis & Loyd Hendershot of Sweeny, Zana & Wayne Ellis of Blessing, Margie & Fred Mielsch of Cedar Lane and Faye & James Pounders of Brazoria; brothers Elby & Van Hanna of Sargent and Paul & Sheila Hanna of Bay City; sisters-in-law: Joyce Hanna of Brazoria and Daisy Hanna of Sweeny; grandchildren Jacquie, Shep, Toya, Matt, Will, Josh, Shannon, Christie, Robert, Dyan, Bridger, Eric & Sherry; ten great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Friday, July 27, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Sweeny with Rev. Jeryl Watkins officiating. Interment with Military honors will follow at the Sweeny Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5PM to 8PM Thursday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be: Will, Josh, & Bridger Hanna, Eric Lane, Donnie Slaughter, Monty Hanna, and Brad Finley. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Sweeny, Shriner Children's Hospital, or for the care of Tyra Hanna at the First State Bank of Louise, Sweeny Branch.
