Garrett Harrison Claybourn, born September 21, 1983, in Palacios, Texas, died February 22, 2026.
Garrett grew up on Slone Ranch, where he learned to love hunting, fishing, and generally any activity that could get him outdoors. He was friendly, gregarious, and had a wonderful sense of humor. His out-of-town cousins loved spending time with Garrett as he showed them how to enjoy being in the country. His friends often talked about how smart he was, because he was a quick study with anything that caught his interest. He always had a passion he was pursuing, and one of his most recent ones was beekeeping. Garrett had a special love for all animals and often had a menagerie of pets from dogs and birds to ferrets and chickens.
Garrett had a good heart, and he became a local celebrity during Hurricane Harvey, when he posted weather conditions on Facebook to update residents. People then used the comments to send him addresses of loved ones they couldn’t reach, and he made his way through often treacherous conditions to check on people who might need help.
Garrett married Tera Hopmann on October 24, 2009, and together they had five beautiful children.
Garrett was preceded in death by his father, Clayton Claybourn, and his infant son, Reid Harrison Claybourn.
Garrett leaves behind his wife, Tera, and his cherished daughters, Reece, Hannah, Caroline, and Charlotte, his mother, Holly Claybourn, his sister Nellie Lee (B.J.) and his niece Hazel. He also leaves behind his grandmother, Colleen Claybourn, his in-laws, Randy and Claudia Coward and Ray and Mary Ann Hopmann, his sister-in-law Jennifer Hopmann and niece Camryn.
Though he will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that he was surely greeted at Heaven’s gate by his late father, Clayton, and his precious son, Reid.
Visitation will be held between 10 a.m. and noon at the Palacios Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Funeral services will follow at St. John's Episcopal Church in Palacios at 1 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at the Palacios Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church.
