Obituary

Freddie J. Dornak passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2012. Born on August 10, 1935 in Blessing, Texas, he attended first grade at Blessing and the remaining years at Holy Cross Catholic School in Bay City and graduated from Bay City High School in May 1953. He enlisted in the US Air Force in July 1953 and married Irene Anne Hickl, daughter of John and Albina Hickl, on May 20, 1958. While assigned in Madison, Wisconsin, he became the proud father of a son, Mark, who was born June 19, 1961, and a daughter Cheryl, born January 8, 1963. Freddie served in the US Air Force until July 1974, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant. He spent most of his military career in Satellite and Missile Warning Defense Systems with overseas tours in Germany, Labrador and Vietnam. While stationed in Colorado Springs, CO., he was part of a select team, which was responsible for testing computer software, training and operating the Space Defense Center in North America Air Defense Cheyenne Mountain Complex. In 1967, he was assigned to a team to test computer software, train and operate a first one of a kind phased array radar system at Eglin AFB in Florida. Their mission was to track satellites and missiles. Fred was awarded the Bronze Star for Outstanding Performance while serving in Vietnam and also receiving four Air Force Commendations for Outstanding Performance. While on active duty, he attended Florida State University, Southern Colorado State University and Okaloosa Walton Junior College and an earned Bachelor's Degree in Business Technology from University of Houston in 1987. After retiring from the Air Force, Fred worked for Brown and Root, Hydril, Property Management Systems, NCNB of Texas and Lone Star College Kingwood where he was employed as a Director of Facilities. He thoroughly enjoyed working with students and was involved in the design and construction of the Student/Fine Arts Center and the Health and Science Buildings. Under his leadership Campus was awarded a commendation for outstanding building maintenance, landscaping and beauty of the Campus by Texas accreditation of Colleges. Fred retired from the college after 18 years at the age of 73. Active in church functions, he was one of the first in Colorado Springs to be ordained a Lay Eucharistic Minister and served many parishes for numerous years including St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Humble and St. Martha's Catholic Church in Kingwood. He enjoyed building model airplanes and working with antique cars. He loved to work on his 1929 Model A Ford as well as a 1951 Chevrolet pickup.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents Albina and Method Dornak, and brothers, Edwin, Donald and baby Robert Dornak.

Freddie J. Dornak is survived by his loving wife of 54 Years Irene, son Mark Dornak wife Jamie of Houston, daughter Cheryl Dornak of Eagle, Co., and grandson Richie Lynch sister Georgianne Smith of Canyon Lake, brother Jerry Dornak, League City, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and close family friends.

A Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM Monday, January 30, 2012 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Mass will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, Jaunary 31, 2012 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, located at 306 Hickory St. in Blessing, Texas and burial at St. Peter's Cemetery
