Frank Edward Matthes, Jr., 84, of Bay City passed away March 22, 2007. He was born August 10, 1922 in Slaton, Texas to Frank E. Matthes, Sr. and Tommye Thomas Matthes. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather who was greatly loved by his family. He was a deeply devoted Christian who expressed his beliefs by service to others. Frank served his country during WWII as an Anti-Aircraft Gunner in the Pacific Theater. When Frank returned home to Blessing he soon met and married Phern Rhea. They were constant companions and best friends for more tha 56 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a life member of VFW Post 2438.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Phern Matthes of Bay City; daughters and sons-in-law Fay & Syd Gilzow of Bay City and Velma & Jerry Greer of Montgomery, TX; son Charles Matthes of San Marcos, TX; sister & brother-in-law Betty & Ross Thornton of Timpson, TX; brother-in-law Bill King and wife Nadine of CA; nine grandchildren Timothy, Bethany, & Sarah Matthes, Jessica Gabrien, Gydeon, & Georgia Gilzow, and Marc & Lori Greer and by four great grandchildren Isbella, Audrey, Olivia, and Zoey Gilzow.
Funeral service will be 3:00 PM Sunday, March 25, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church in Bay City with Rev. John-Nelson Pope officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers include Gabrien Gilzow, Gydeon Gilzow, Timothy Matthes, Marc Greer, Carl King and Pat Matthes. The family will greet friends and relatives from 6pm-8pm Saturday at the funeral home.
