Elsie Gertrude Kirn, 87, of Midfield, Texas went to be with the Lord at 10:30 pm, June 29, 2010, at Warm Springs Hospital in Victoria, Texas. Elsie was born October 10, 1922 in Midfield, Texas to the late Manuel and Eva Woodson. She was the eldest of two sisters.
Elsie had a love for teaching. She received a degree in education at South West Texas State University in San Marcus, Texas. She taught High School students for 32 years. Her teaching career began in Texas, teaching Home Economics. After teaching several years in Texas, Elsie moved to Gallup, Arizona and taught on an Indian Reservation. She loved to introduce her students to new foods that they had not experienced before. Later Elsie moved to Sierra Vista, to teach at the High School. She began her teaching there in a Territorial building until the local Army base was reactivated and a new school was built. Elsie taught in Sierra Vista until she retired. While living there she meet her husband George Kirn. They enjoyed their life together for 20 years.
Elsie had a love for cooking. She enjoyed baking cakes and pies for others. She volunteered with the Harvest House food distribution ministry in Bay City. She also helped make stuffed frogs for children in the local hospital and supported Pathway Evangelism.
She was preceded in death by her parents Manuel and Eva Woodson, her husband George Kirn, her brother-in-law Eugene Rickaway and nephew John Paul Rickaway.
Survivors include sister June Marie Rickaway, nephew Ken Smith of Grand Junction, Colorado, nephew James Rickaway and wife Joretta of Lebanon, Tennessee, nephew Mark Rickaway and wife Angel of Midfield, Texas, nephew Ray Rickaway and wife Ruthy of College Station, Texas and a niece Anita Smith and husband Don of Kingwood, Texas. In addition, other survivors include great nephews and nieces Jonathon Rickaway, Jeremy Rickaway, Kyle Rickaway, Abigail Rickaway, Joshua Rickaway, Jonathon Klippel, Julie Klippel, Michael Smith and Judy Smith.
Visitation will be held 5 PM to 8 PM Thursday, July 1 at Taylor Bros Funeral Home in Bay City, Texas.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Friday, July 2 at the Nichols Street Church of Christ with Bro. Larry Macomber officiating. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery, Blessing, Texas.
