Obituary

Elroy James Hahn, age 90 of Markham passed away on April 13, 2016, at Matagorda Regional Medical Center. He was born on September 10, 1925, in Sample, Gonzales County, Texas to John Joseph and Elsie De Reese Hahn.

Elroy moved to Matagorda County in 1929. He lived in the El Maton community for 32 years. On March 15, 1944, Mr. Hahn entered the United States Army and served in World War II. He was in the 656th Tank Destroyer Battalion seeing action in Germany with the Ninth Armored Division. He served as an assistant gunner on the Tank Destroyers. Upon returning from Germany, he and his Battalion marched in the Chicago Parade on Memorial Day. Mr. Hahn was reassigned to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky waiting for orders to go to Japan. World War II ended prior to the transfer. Elroy was discharged in April of 1946. He returned to El Maton to continue farming. After his father's death, he and his mother relocated to Markham in 1963. He was the loving caretaker and devoted son to his mother, who preceded him in death on January 16, 1997. Also preceding him in death is his brother, Johnnie Louis Hahn, sister-in-law, Evalee Frick Hahn, brothers-in-law, A. T. Richardson and J. T. Frick.

Elroy is survived by two sisters, Lorene Hahn Frick of Markham and Ruby Hahn Richardson of Bay City. He is also survived by nieces, Tommie Marie Anglemyer of Plano, Jenny West of Bay City, Anna Hurta of Midfield, Gail Saathoff of Hondo and Jill Cornelius of Bay City; and by three nephews, Johnnie Lee Hahn of Bay City, Greg Snelling of Austin and Jeff Snelling of Reno, Nevada.

Elroy was a Life Member of Cecil Lee Post #649 American Legion of Blessing, Texas. He was also a Life Member of VFW Post 2438, Phillip Parker Post 2438 of Bay City. In lieu of flowers,

Funeral services are at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City with Rev. Bill Ramsey officiating. Burial is at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck.
Pallbearers are: Johnnie Lee Hahn, Greg Snelling, Jeff Snelling, Ron Anglemyer, Louis West, and Bryan Hurta.

The family extends its gratitude to the staff and caretakers at Bay Villa Nursing Home where Elroy was a resident for the past 16 years.
