Obituary

Elmer Sellers Latham, 73, was called home to be with his savior, Jesus Christ, on Marach 19, 2026. Born in Washington, North Carolina. Elmer was the cherished son of Elmer Randolph Latham and Sarabeth Sellers Latham. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Elmer in 1986 and Sarabeth in 2013, whose memory he lovingly carried throughout his life.

Elmer’s life was a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of adventure, dedication, and boundless love. He graduated from Chocowinity High School in 1970 where he was voted “Most Popular” by his classmates. He later graduated in the top 10 percentile of hi class from the AND Nursing Program at Pitt Community College. A man of varied talents and immense heart, Elmer embarked on numerous careers, each reflecting his remarkable adaptability and zest for life. From construction work that took him across North Carolina, Wyoming and Texas, to working on the Alaksa Pipeline, commercial shrimping off the coast of Southeast Texas, running a family-owned fish house alongside his father-in-law, becoming an orthopedic RN and Culminating his work doing shutdowns for a nuclear plant in Texas.

Elmer’s true joy was found when his feet were in the water, whether skiing, fishing or boating on the Pamlico River of his birthplace or shrimping and fishing along the Gulf Stream’s waters. His adventurous heart also found solace in riding his motorcycles, often accompanied by his brother, forging cherished memories in his final years. These adventures were interwoven with family vacations to the North Carolina mountains, where he created cherished memories with his children.

Elmer’s legacy is carried on by his children, all born in Matagorda, Texas: Courtney (Neil) Jurek, Gregory (Stacey) Latham, Austin Latham and Andrew Fritzsching. He is also survived by his siblings all of Chocowinity, NC, Cheryl “Raney” (Larry) Pittman, Gregory (Diane) Latham residing in Currie, NC, Suzanne (Jimmie) Whichard and Tanya (Tommy) Hardison residing in Blount’s Creek, NC, as well as his cherished grandson, Jay Evers and a multitude of nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Elmer.

Elmer’s life was a testament to the power of love, friendship and faith. He was a true friend to all, always ready with a joke, an encouraging word, or a helping hand. His faith in Jesus Christ was his guiding light, allowing him to live without fear and with an unshakeable peace and joy. This faith was his final gift and wish for those he leaves behind, that they too might know the comfort and happiness he found in his Creator. As we celebrate Elmer Sellers Latham’s remarkable life, we are reminded of his indomitable spirit and the love he shared so freely. May we honor his memory by living as he did – Fully, Joyfully and with an open heart to every new day. Res in peace, dear Elmer, cradled in the gentle arms of your Savior, Jesus Christ.
