Elizabeth “Lizzy” Ann Owen, 65, of Bay City, Texas, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2026. She was born on June 12, 1960, to the late William Heman Owen, Jr. and Martha Zernicek Owen.
Lizzy graduated from Bay City, Class of 1978. She then ventured to San Marcos, Texas, where she began her studies at South West Texas State University and completed her special education journey in Roswell, New Mexico. In 1996-1997, she started teaching at Goddard High School. While at the school, she was fiercely dedicated to improving and teaching life skills to her special needs students. She had a unique way of showing each student love and compassion. In 2017 she chose to retire. Due to her commitment to her students, she elected to come out of retirement so she could better serve her students. Lizzy’s hobbies revolved around community. Her home and kitchen were a source of comfort and love for many. Once you entered her home, you became family. Lizzy was an avid Roswell Invaders fan. She opened her home to these young men during the summer, as well as missionaries, foreign exchange students and numerous others. Her teaching and giving heart impacted the lives of many. Lizzy’s main priority once her mom passed was to provide a fulfilled life for her little sister, Mary Jean, which she has done selflessly for over two decades.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mona Garderner; and brothers, Emil Owen, and Joseph Owen. She is survived by her brother, William Owen III and life partner Michael Jones; sisters, Dina Owen Hite and partner John Pratt, Janet Owen Wood and husband Bobby Wood, Sr., and Mary Jean Owen. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
