Today, we morn the passing of Effie "Ida" Eastman Lyle Johns, 89, of Victoria, TX (formerly of Bay City) as a result of a declining health and dementia. Ida was born in Tavner, TX on July 29, 1919 to Loraine Rufus Eastman and Francis Fojtik Eastman. December 1924, her family loaded the family wagon and moved to Cedar Lane, Texas , only to wake up to snow the next morning. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1939 along with her high school sweetheart William A. "Alex" Lyle Sr. They were married after a long courtship on June 7th, 1942. While Alex was off serving his country overseas, Ida worked at the Houston Ship Yards as a welder.
After the war, Ida and Alex settled in Bay City and started a family. They had 3 children: William Alexander "Bill" Lyle Jr., Lynel Lyle Welvaert, and James Eastman Lyle. After 43 years of marriage, Alex died in a car accident. Ida survived breast cancer in 1986, but made a full recovery to go on to enjoy her garden and yard. In 1988, she and Charles Johns Jr. were married. They had 14 years together, until his death due to complications from Alzheimer's disease.
Due to her health, in 2005, Mrs. Johns took up residency at Texan East Nursing and Rehab in Victoria, TX. She was an avid Bingo player at the facility, looked forward to the visits of Mr. & Mrs. Rex Moore from the First Baptist Church, Bay City, watching the birds and squirrels out her window and visitation of her great grandsons. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City and the TOPS of Bay City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: W. A. Lyle Sr. and Charles Johns Jr., her oldest son, Bill; a brother: Melvin Eastman; and her sister: Lettie Eastman Legg.
She is survived by her children: Lynel Welvaert (Jim) of Victoria and James E. Lyle (Joy) of LaGrange; Grandchildren: Jamie Rainey (Shawn) of Victoria, J. Russel Boyd (Brandi) of Kyle, TX, Jonna Lyle of LaGrange, and James Alexander Lyle of Odessa, TX; Great grandchildren: Ashton and Branton Rainey of Victoria: her sisters: Alice Brown of Houston, TX and Vivian Harmon of Alleyton, TX: and by many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the special caregivers over the years - especially Eunice Moore, Sharon Perry, and Dorothy Parks of Bay City. Also, special nurses Alethea, Sylvia, Sandra, Nancy, Tabitha and the wonderful Crown Hospice Family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck, TX. Pallbearers will be James Alexander Lyle, Joseph Russell Boyd, Jackie Wotipka, Shawn Rainey, Jim Welvaert, and David Lyle. Honorary pallbearers are the Jubilaires and members of the First Baptist Church in Bay City.
