Edith Mary Hickl passed away to her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at the age of 90. She was born May 14, 1935, to the late John and Celestina (Kulcak) Merta of Taiton, TX, and was one of six children. Edith married Lawrence Hickl of El Maton, TX, on October 27, 1954, and settled in El Maton. They raised three daughters, Ann, Grace, and Jeanne, and two sons, Larry and Mark.
Edith farmed alongside Lawrence and enjoyed managing the business, but she mostly enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, and baking. A woman of strong faith, Edith was devoted to the Rosary and Pieta prayers. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing, TX, where she attended daily Mass when possible. She was very talented and regularly contributed baked goods and various arts and crafts to the Bay City Hospital, where she volunteered, and to the annual Turkey Dinner at St. Peter’s Church.
Edith is survived by her daughters, Ann Williams (Larry), Grace Hazlewood (Doug), and Jeanne Hickl, all of Victoria; her sons, Larry Hickl (Jackie) of El Maton and Mark Hickl (Kim) of Austin; her brother, Alvin Merta of El Campo; and her sisters, Annie Kaspar of El Campo and Bessie Konvicka of Wharton. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jason Williams (Keara) and Aaron Williams; Stephen Hazlewood (Elisabeth) and Rachel Whiting (Eric); John and Joyce Hickl; and Kristin, Michael, and Daniel Hickl. She is further survived by her great-grandchildren, James, Annie, Helen, and Jack Hazlewood, and Elya and Evan Whiting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Hickl; her parents, John and Celestina Merta; her brother, John Merta; and her sister, Sophie Balcar.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on May 6, 2026, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing, TX. The Rosary will start at 10:30 a.m., and the Funeral Mass will commence at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Father Gabriel Mensah officiating. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Blessing.
Pallbearers will be Jason and Aaron Williams, Stephen Hazlewood, and John, Michael, and Daniel Hickl.
