Obituary

Edith LaRue (Johnson) Henry left this world for her heavenly home on Monday, November 1, 2021, where she was welcomed by her Lord and Savior as well as loved ones who had gone before.

Edith was born December 23, 1920, in Roby, Texas, to the late Guy DeWitt and Willie Mae (Bennett) Johnson.  She graduated from Roby High School and attended business college in Abilene, Texas, where she met Littleton Pierson "Ish" Henry whom she married on April 23, 1939.  Although they only courted 30 days, they were happily married for 70 years before Ish passed away in September of 2009.

Edith was a devoted wife and mother.  She enjoyed her role as a full-time homemaker where she was able to employ her gifts of sewing and cooking.  Edith also loved traveling – especially when it meant she was able to spend time with family and friends.

Above all else, Edith loved her Lord as was evidenced by her daily Bible study and consistent prayer life.  Her relationship with Christ began when she gave her heart to the Lord on a Sunday morning after Sunday School.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Sweeny for over 64 years where she worked with the teenage mission group called YWA's (Young Women's Association), WMU (Women's Missionary Union) and taught Sunday School.  She also enjoyed going on mission trips with the youth of First Baptist.  When Edith was no longer able to physically attend services, she remained faithful to her Savior through her continued financial support and daily prayers for the church and mission work.   Her greatest gift to her family was the knowledge that she prayed for each of them by name every single day.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother, Leander "Bud" Johnson, sister, Mildred Knox, son-in-law, James Crisp, and grandson, Steven Crisp.

She is survived by daughters, Sherry Crisp of Sweeny, Kathie Sexton and husband, Kenneth, of Sweeny and Teri Haefs and husband, Tony, of Columbia, South Carolina.  Additionally, she is survived by brother, James Weldon "Doc" Johnson, 8 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren and her dear friend and deacon, Charlie Crouch, of Sweeny, who faithfully called her every Monday morning for the past 10 ½ years.

Visitation will be 10:00 to 10:45am Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at First Baptist Church, 402 N. Main Street, Sweeny, Texas, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00am.  Her grandson, Pastor Jonathan Haefs, will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sweeny Cemetery on Old Main Street.

The family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church in Sweeny or to AMG (Advancing the Ministries of the Gospel) based in Chattanooga, TN.  Their website is https://amginterntional.org .
