Dr. James K. Simons, 82, of Driftwood, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. He was born on April 14, 1944, in Bay City, Texas, to the late Dr. Bryan Elmo Simons and Lenore Simons.
James was raised in Bay City, where he attended school and met the love of his life, Helen Dale Simons. Their love story spanned nearly six decades, and they were blessed with 58 years of marriage filled with devotion, laughter, and cherished memories. He attended Texas A&M University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree before pursuing his doctoral studies at UT Health Houston School of Dentistry. Following the completion of his degree, he continued his training through a residency program in Cincinnati, Ohio.
After completing his residency, Dr. Simons moved to Longview, Texas, where he opened his first pediatric dental practice. He spent many successful years serving the families of East Texas before relocating to Austin in the mid-to-late 1990s. There, he established a new practice and continued caring for children and their families until his retirement in 2010. Dr. Simons dedicated 38 years of his life to pediatric dentistry. Throughout his distinguished career, he cared for thousands of children, providing not only exceptional dental treatment but also comfort, encouragement, and compassion. He took great pride in helping young patients develop healthy smiles and positive experiences with dental care. His commitment to his profession and the well-being of children left a lasting impact on countless families. A man of deep Christian faith, James loved Christ and sought to reflect that love in every aspect of his life. He demonstrated his faith through his service to others, his compassionate care for his patients, and his unwavering devotion to his family. His kindness, generosity, and servant’s heart were a testament to the values he held dear and the faith that guided him throughout his life.
Outside of his career, James embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude. He had a lifelong love for the outdoors and could often be found hunting, fishing, or spending time with his beloved bird dogs. He treasured early mornings in the field, afternoons on the water, and the companionship of his loyal dogs. An accomplished cook, he delighted in preparing meals for family and friends, gathering loved ones around the table, and creating memories through food, fellowship, and storytelling.
James was also a devoted fan of Texas A&M athletics. His love for Aggie football began during his college years and remained a lifelong passion. Saturdays in the fall were often spent cheering on the Aggies, celebrating victories, and sharing in the traditions and spirit of Texas A&M with family and friends.
Known for his kind heart, strong work ethic, quick wit, and unwavering dedication to his family, James found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved. He was happiest when surrounded by family, friends, good food, faithful dogs, and the traditions he held dear. He leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, faith, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former patients, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable life.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Dale Simons; his parents, Dr. Bryan Elmo Simons and Lenore Simons; his daughter, Helen Elizabeth Simons; his sister, Barbara Slone; and his brother, Dr. Bryan E. Simons Jr. Survivors include his son, John S. Simons and wife Patricia E. Simons; his son, Dr. Bryan C.
